IPFN: trust in creative work

A public reference for creative work, attribution and supporting evidence, wherever the work travels.

A creative work should be easier to connect with the person who claims it. IPFN gives that connection a public reference: one place to inspect a registered claim, identify the work it concerns and examine the evidence attached to it.

This is a global purpose, not a regional badge. Artists, authors, publishers, galleries and readers need a clearer way to ask the same questions: What work is this? Who is making the claim? What supports it? What has been declared about how it was made?

A reference that can travel with the work

An IPFN can be shared alongside an image or publication so another person has somewhere to begin checking its recorded attribution and provenance. The identifier connects a conversation about a work to a specific public record, rather than leaving the claim scattered across captions, messages and screenshots.

For an artist, that means a reference to include when presenting work. For a publisher or gallery, it provides a starting point for checking a submission. For a reader or collector, it makes the recorded claimant and available evidence inspectable. These are uses of the record, not a promise that every rights question has already been resolved.

Connect the claim, the file and the evidence

Trust comes from making the connection understandable. Start with the named claimant and the work described in the record. Then inspect the exact-file fingerprint and any certificate, storage or ledger receipts that are available.

A matching fingerprint helps establish that two files contain the same bytes. The claimant record shows who submitted the claim within the service. Supporting evidence can add context to that association. Keeping those elements distinct makes the record more useful: a viewer can see which conclusion is supported rather than having to take a badge on faith.

Account access alone is not independent proof of legal identity or copyright ownership. Likewise, a file match is not an adjudication of authorship. A useful record makes those distinctions visible without hiding the work itself.

Make AI-use declarations understandable

Where a record includes an AI-use or non-use declaration, readers should be able to identify who made it, what part of the creative process it concerns and what supporting evidence is present. Capture, editing and generation are different questions.

The purpose is to make a creator's statement inspectable, not to turn an absent field into a verdict. Missing information does not establish that no AI was used, and a declaration is not the same as independent technical verification. Clear attribution of the statement is the starting point for an informed conversation.

Check what has actually completed

Registration, file storage, certificate availability and ledger anchoring are separate stages. Follow the record's own receipts to distinguish a pending step from a completed one. Where an anchor is recorded, inspect its network, transaction and confirmation state.

A test record proves a test, not a production registration. A timestamp concerns the event it records, not automatically the date the artwork was created. The record-reading guide explains how to inspect these layers in practice.

Useful across borders, precise about rights

IPFN's public reference is intended to support trust wherever creative work is shared. That does not make it a universal copyright title. WIPO explains that copyright generally arises automatically in the majority of countries, while national laws and registration systems differ. A private claim record does not replace applicable legal requirements or determine a dispute.

Standards and official recognition also have specific meanings. For example, C2PA conformance is a separate assessment; preserving a credential-bearing file is not, by itself, product conformance or credential validation. Any claim of institutional recognition should identify the exact body, service and supporting evidence. This page claims no government approval or qualified trust-service status.

Explore the record and the wider ecosystem

Use IPFN Learn to understand the system and Check to inspect a reference. ARTSSN is the operating home of the ecosystem. Bookend gives a book a reader-facing digital home, while Blinding Visuals Press brings selected work into print.

The goal is practical: make creative work easier to identify, its recorded attribution easier to inspect and its supporting evidence easier to follow. Trust should come from a clear connection that another person can examine.
